Checkers is the game, leaving its roots in high antiquity. Sometimes checkers are mentioned in ancient Egyptian myths. Some historical sources approve that even Egyptian Pharaohs enjoyed playing checkers! Classical Greek historian and philosopher Plato has immortalized a myth about the founder of checkers, god Hermes.

Hermes has suggested the Moon goddess to play checkers. Hermes has declared that if Moon looses, she owes him 5 days. Moon lost out to Hermes. Hermes has received 5 days and has added them to those 360 that already existing. Thus to checkers we are obliged that there are 365 days in calendar year! The knights of Middle Ages, inhabiting Europe, have been obliged to know play checkers, that was the basis of their education. Under historical data checkers appeared in Russia approximately beginning from middle of X century. There were found checkers made of amber, stone, horns and clay on the territory of Kievan Rus. This typifies checkers as the game, which has won hearts of all strata of the public. Similar findings were discovered in Sweden, Norway and other northern countries inhabited by Vikings. Apparently, severe northern soldiers also have brought checkers to the Rus grounds, floating «from the Varagians to the Greeks». Checkers were one of the most favorite games of tsar Peter I. He publicized and developed checkers during almost all his period of governing. He was playing checkers on " the assemblies", and even has enjoined to allocate a special room for checkers playing. Possibly, this is the reason why checkers has got popularity among Russian merchants and all middle-class, who played checkers in any place where it was necessary to stop off along the line. Therefore in Russia as in the most playing country, the game was mentioned as «Russian checkers». Liberal Russian writers and philosophers loved to play Russian checkers. Among them are Derzhavin, Pushkin, Karamzin, L.Tolstoy. Lev Tolstoy even compares checkers to war strategies in his novel "War and peace". Rumor says, that Napoleon preferred checkers to all other games (apparently, he loved «Russian checkers » especially!) and he always carried a nacreous checkerboard with himself. Checkers game is designed for two partners to play on a square multi-cellular board. Cells for the checkers are painted in dark and light colors by turns. The players mostly use round checks symbolizing battling warriors, as well as in chess. The purpose of game is strategy at which it is necessary "to kill" as much as possible opponents, having reached the outer horizontal field of the board and becoming «king».
